On May 7 (Moscow time), TASS news agency quoted an article by Mr. Dmitry Medvedev, Vice Chairman of the Russian Security Council, as saying that Moscow issued a tough warning about the risk of direct conflict between Russia and Germany.
According to Mr. Medvedev, if Russia and Germany fall into a military confrontation, the consequences will not only affect Berlin but also affect the entire Europe. He said that this is a clear message that Russia wants to send to the German leadership in the context of Berlin's rapidly changing defense policy.
In the article, Mr. Medvedev especially emphasized German industry. He believes that if a military confrontation breaks out, the industry, which is considered Germany's strength, may suffer heavy losses, leading to the risk of serious economic decline in the country for a long time.
Mr. Medvedev also said that in the worst-case scenario, a part of qualified personnel in Germany may leave this country to go to Russia, the US, China or other Asian countries.
The above statements were made in the context of Russia-Germany relations continuing to be tense due to the conflict in Ukraine. Since the outbreak of war, Berlin has increased support for Kiev, including military aid, financial aid and support packages within the European framework. Germany has also repeatedly emphasized its commitment to Ukraine's security and its role in the European security structure.
Along with that, Germany is stepping up defense spending and promoting military modernization. These moves are explained by Berlin as necessary in the context of changing European security.
However, from Russia's side, Germany's expansion of its military role and continued support for Ukraine is seen as a sign that Berlin is following a tougher line with Moscow.
Mr. Medvedev said that German leaders need to carefully consider the consequences if they continue to promote militarization policies.
The German government has not yet commented on the new statement from Russia.
