On July 13 (local time), according to TASS, Iran and Russia are approaching the final stage in the process of completing the Russian gas supply contract to the Islamic Republic of Iran, after the two sides agreed on important terms of the agreement.
The information was announced by Iranian Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad on the sidelines of a meeting with Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov in Tehran.
Mr. Paknejad said that most of the terms of the gas trade agreement between the two countries have been agreed upon and the two sides are promoting final steps to soon complete the contract.
The main terms of the final gas agreement between Iran and Russia have been agreed upon. We have developed a plan to complete this document as soon as possible," the Iranian Oil Minister told Iranian National Television.
According to Mr. Paknejad, the focus of this talks is to expand cooperation in the energy sector between the two countries.
The two sides also discussed the investments of Russian businesses in oil and gas fields in Iran, and looked for solutions to remove some existing problems in the process of implementing cooperation projects.
We have discussed the investment of Russian companies in Iranian oil and gas fields. Some issues have been agreed upon by the two sides for handling and included in the work program," Mr. Paknejad said.
The gas cooperation process between Russia and Iran has been promoted for more than a year.
In January 2025, Russian Energy Minister Sergey Tsivilyov said that Moscow and Tehran had agreed on a plan to build a gas pipeline to Iran through Azerbaijan. At that time, the two countries will only negotiate the final contents related to the price level.
According to the plan, the first phase of the project can supply about 2 billion m3 of gas per year, before gradually increasing capacity to 55 billion m3.
In August 2025, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali also expressed his expectation that Russian gas would soon be transported to Iran through Azerbaijan, and said that almost all technical and commercial issues between Gazprom and Iran had been resolved.
If the contract is signed in the near future, this will be an important step forward in energy cooperation between Russia and Iran, in the context that the two countries are strengthening economic relations and seeking new cooperation channels in the face of global energy market fluctuations.
