According to Reuters, Russia launched a drone attack on the Ukrainian capital, killing at least 3 people, including a 5-year-old child.
The explosions caused fires in many high-rise apartment buildings and spread throughout the city, according to Ukrainian officials on the morning of March 23.
The scale of damage from the attack overnight was not immediately determined. However, Vitali Mayor Klitschko said rescue forces had been deployed to several districts of Kiev to respond to fires and damage.
In Holosiivskyi district, rescue forces found the body of a child and a man at the same location. The Ukrainian Home Ministry said that 8 others were injured in the attack.
Images from the Emergency Rescue Agency show firefighters fighting the fire at night, especially in a high-rise apartment building. In Dniprovskyi district, a woman died after debris from a drone set fire to a residential building. At least 27 people have been evacuated from the area.
Outside Kiev, two people were injured and many houses were damaged in the vicinity of the capital, according to regional Governor Mykola Kalashnik. Kiev and eastern Ukraine have been under airstrike alert for more than five hours since the evening of March 22.
There has been no official response from Russia to the attack. Both sides in the conflict that has lasted for more than three years have denied targeting civilians.
Meanwhile, the international community is pushing for a peace deal between Ukraine and Russia, in the hope of reaching a partial ceasefire to end attacks on energy infrastructure. However, the war was still ongoing with airstrikes from both sides.
