Russian Su-34 fighter jet crashes, pilot escapes

The Russian Defense Ministry confirmed that a Su-34 fighter jet crashed in the Nizhny Novgorod region during a training flight on July 1.

Both crew members managed to escape despite being in danger and surviving.

According to the report cited by Russian media, the plane crash occurred during landing, when the escape system of one side of the plane was not working. Although the pilots tried to fix the problem while still in the air, the crew was eventually forced to move the plane out of the residential area and parachute to escape.

The plane was not carrying weapons at the time of the incident, and no ground damage was reported.

A rescue team was quickly dispatched to the scene to bring the two soldiers back to the base. The Russian Defense Ministry said that both are alive and are being cared for.

This is the third crash involving a Russian military plane in less than three months.

In April 2025, a Tu-22M long-range strategic bomb squadron crashed in the Irkutsk region. Of the four crew members, three survived, while the pilot did not survive due to injuries after receiving the ground.

Previously, a Su-25 also crashed during a training flight in the Primorsky region, the Far East. The pilot parachuted in time and was saved.
