Chief of Police Carlos Triana said that a teenager aged just 15 was arrested at a park in the Fontibon area of the capital Bogota, where Colombian lawmaker Miguel Uribe (39 years old) was attacked not long before, while campaigning for the Colombian presidency in the 2026 election.
According to the police, the teenager was arrested for being found carrying a gun when a tragedy occurred to Mr. Miguel. The police did not disclose the identity or type of gun that was confiscated.
Triana police further revealed that the suspect had a wound on his leg when he was arrested and was being treated.
According to a medical report from the Santa Fe Foundation Hospital, Mr. Uribe was hospitalized in critical condition and had to undergo surgery on his peripheral neuropathy and blood vessels.
Maria Claudia Tarazone - Mr. Uribe's wife - wrote on social network X that her husband was "fighting for life" and called on Colombians to pray for him.
Mr. Uribe was said to have been hit by two shots from behind, at least one of which hit his neck or head. Video circulating on social media shows him bleeding from the head after being given first aid by assistants and people.
The Colombian government has offered a $730,000 reward to those who volunteer to provide accurate information about the case.
President Gustavo Petro said he would investigate who was behind the assassination and said that "all theories are being considered" and pledged to review the loopholes in the security protection process.
