German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul was in Kiev to discuss forms of support for Ukraine in the conflict with Russia. This information was confirmed by the German Foreign Ministry on June 30.
Speaking during the visit, Mr. Wadephul affirmed Berlin's commitment to Kiev: "We will continue to fight side by side with Ukraine so that it can successfully defend itself - with modern air defense systems and other weapons, along with humanitarian and economic aid."
The trip of the top German diplomat comes shortly after Ukraine suffered a major attack by hundreds of drones, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles from Russia. The event prompted President Volodymyr Zelensky to continue calling on Washington and its Western allies to support the strengthening of air defense systems.
Germany is currently the second largest military sponsor to Ukraine after the US. However, the US's lack of clear commitments to Kiev has raised concerns about a decline in support from Washington, and put pressure on European countries to make up for this gap.
With Russia increasing its attacks and Ukraine's defense system facing great pressure, the role of Germany and other European countries has become more important than ever. Discussions in Kiev are expected to revolve around specific measures to continue providing weapons, enhancing defense capabilities and ensuring regular humanitarian aid.
