On August 6, the Khmer Times reported that in an official statement issued on August 4, King Norodom Sihamoni emphasized the seriousness of recent threats to Cambodia's territorial integrity, in the context of the tense Thailand - Cambodia border.
Quoting the spirit of the Cambodian Constitution, the King expressed his complete confidence that both leaders will jointly solve national security issues.
"I hereby authorize Samdech Techo Hun Sen to closely cooperate with Samdech Hun Manet on all issues related to the military, defense, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Cambodia," the statement read.
The King also expressed his respect for the heroic spirit and bravery of the Cambodian armed forces, who have steadfastly defended the country in recent days. The King praised their bravery on the front line, as well as the solidarity and determination of the Cambodian people across the country.
I express my deepest admiration for the heroic soldiers who fought bravely on the battlefield to protect the country, the territory and the people. I also commend the solidarity of our people, who have united together to strengthen national unity under the wise leadership of the Royal Government - the Kings statement emphasized.
The King concluded his speech by expressing his highest respect and sincere affection to both Mr. Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet for their continuous service and commitment to the country.
Pa Chanroeun, a social analyst and president of the Cambodian Democratic Institute, said the decision marked a significant step forward in administrative coordination and was made at a pivotal time for the country. Accordingly, Prime Minister Hun Manet will continue to lead the army and now has the support and close direction of his father, Mr. Hun Sen.
"The prime minister will still take control of the armed forces but will now benefit from Hun Sen's close participation and extensive experience, which will be especially valuable during this tense period. We consider this a practical and strategic cooperation that can enhance national stability," said Pa Chanroeun.
