The screenshot does not show any response from Mr. Trump to Mr. Macron. The White House and the French President's office did not comment on the request for response regarding the incident. A source close to Mr. Macron confirmed that the message shared by Mr. Trump was from Mr. Macron.
The move to publicize private messages took place in the context that European Union leaders are scheduled to hold an emergency meeting in Brussels on the evening of January 22. This meeting was held after Mr. Trump threatened to impose new tariffs on some EU countries related to his request to buy Greenland.
