US President Donald Trump said on September 3 that he plans to conduct negotiations on the conflict in Ukraine in the coming days. The statement came after a conference in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin in August, which did not bring any breakthroughs.
Mr. Trump expressed his disappointment at not being able to end the conflict that broke out in February 2022, even though he had previously predicted that it could quickly bring peace after taking office in January last year. He affirmed that he will continue dialogue to find a way out of the situation.
A White House official said Trump plans to hold a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The French presidential palace also announced that European leaders, including Zelensky and President Emmanuel Macron, would call on Mr Trump on the same day. The call came after an online conference chaired by France with the participation of about 30 countries to discuss a plan to provide security assistance to Ukraine when reaching a peace deal with Russia. European leaders are also expected to condemn Moscow's lack of goodwill for negotiations.
At a meeting with Polish President Karol Nawrocki at the White House, Trump said he did not send a message to Mr. Putin, emphasizing that the Russian leader clearly understood his stance. He added that any decision by Mr. Putin would lead to corresponding reactions from the US side. When asked about the possibility of applying new measures, Mr. Trump hinted at strengthening sanctions against Russia.
Mr. Trump admitted that the process of finding peace in Ukraine was more difficult than expected. I used to think this would be an easy problem to solve, but in reality it is much more complicated, he shared. However, the US President affirmed that this conflict will eventually be resolved " one way or another".
