According to RT, President-elect Donald Trump and Republican members of Congress strongly condemned outgoing President Joe Biden for pardoning his son, Hunter Biden, who was convicted of illegal gun use and possession, tax evasion and drug use.
Mr. Biden announced the pardon on the evening of December 1 (local time) at the White House, although he had previously said he would not intervene in his son’s case. He said his son had been treated unfairly because he was a relative of his.
The pardon applies to all crimes that occurred or may have occurred between January 1, 2014 and December 1, 2024, according to a White House statement. That period includes Republican allegations that Hunter Biden acted as a “middleman” for his father in allegedly illegal business dealings in China and Ukraine, which both Biden and his son have denied.
President-elect Donald Trump also mentioned his supporters who were arrested for attacking the Capitol building on January 6, 2021 in the hope of overturning the election results and asked the question, "Does Joe Biden's pardon for Hunter include the 'January 6 hostages' who have been held for many years?"
Mr. Trump shared on the social network Truth Social that President Joe Biden's move was an abuse of power and unfair.
Republicans have long criticized President Joe Biden's administration for politically motivated prosecutions and have denounced the pardon.
“Joe Biden’s unprecedented abuse of power has tarnished the honor of the office of the American presidency,” the Republican-controlled House Oversight and Accountability Committee said in a statement.
