On November 30 (local time), President-elect Donald Trump announced that he wants Kash Patel, a former national security official and loyal supporter, to take on the role of Director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). This move demonstrates Mr. Trump's determination to remove the current FBI Director, Christopher Wray, who was appointed by him in 2017 but whose term is set to expire in 2027.
Kash Patel, 44, has held key roles under Mr Trump, including advising the Director of National Intelligence and the Secretary of Defense. He is also known for his strong criticism of the FBI, particularly its role in intelligence gathering.
In a September 2024 interview, Patel said the FBI should be reorganized, eliminating its intelligence functions and focusing on law enforcement. He even proposed turning the FBI headquarters in Washington, D.C., into a museum.
Mr Trump’s decision has sparked controversy, especially as FBI Director Christopher Wray is under pressure from Mr Trump’s allies. Under Mr Wray, the FBI executed a search warrant at Mr Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort for classified documents.
Patel, meanwhile, became a controversial figure during Trump’s first term. He helped the Republican Party investigate the FBI’s activities related to the 2016 presidential election, including links between the Trump campaign and Russia. Patel was also accused of participating in covert operations involving Ukraine during Trump’s first impeachment inquiry, an allegation he has denied.
After leaving the White House, Mr Patel remained a loyalist to Mr Trump. He was appointed to access presidential documents and has claimed, without evidence, that Mr Trump had declassified all documents referred to in the investigation.
Patel’s nomination is expected to face strong opposition from Democrats and possibly some Republicans, but he has the support of several prominent Republicans, including Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton.
