According to Politico, this will be the first meeting between the two leaders since Mr. Trump took office.
Speaking after a nearly 90-minute phone call with Mr. Putin, Mr. Trump said the two sides discussed ways to end the conflict in Ukraine and agreed to meet face to face.
“We will eventually meet. In fact, we expect him to come here, I will come here. But we will probably meet for the first time in Saudi Arabia to see if we can work something out,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.
The US president said no date has been set for the meeting, but it would take place “in the not too distant future.” He also suggested Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman attend the meeting. “We know the Crown Prince and I think that would be a very appropriate place to have the meeting,” Trump said.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed on the same day that President Putin had invited Mr. Trump and US government officials to Moscow to discuss Ukraine.
"The Russian President invited the US President to Moscow and expressed his readiness to receive Washington officials to discuss areas of mutual interest, including the issue of resolving the Ukrainian conflict," Peskov said.
Mr Putin’s invitation came shortly after Mr Trump said peace talks would begin “immediately” and that Ukraine might not regain all of its territory, a claim that sparked controversy on both sides of the Atlantic.
