Addicks Reservoir, one of two important reservoirs protecting the city center and Houston Ship Channel, is at its highest water level in history. This reservoir is located west of Houston and was built in the 1940s.
According to the Wall Street Journal, on August 29, the US Army Corps of Engineers controlled the release of floodwaters in two reservoirs in the city. Officials said that despite the release of floodwaters, the water level in the lake is still continuing to rise, leading to the risk of breaking.
Officials said that according to their calculations, the water in Addicks Lake will continue to overflow until September 20. The spillway peak is expected to release about 127,42581 m3 of water per second on August 31.
Residents in areas near the reservoir have been asked to evacuate. The water level will not return to normal for many weeks, according to officials. All water from reservoirs in Houston will flow into the Buffalo Bayou River, a riverway through the city center, and additional flood discharge could also cause flooding along the Bayou.
