Gold treasure discovered in a series of ancient Egyptian tombs

Dozens of 2,500-year-old ancient Egyptian tombs containing intact gold treasures have just been discovered.

Egyptian archaeologists have found gold leaf and a small statue of the ancient Egyptian gods Isis, Bastet and Horus in dozens of tombs dating back at least 2,500 years in an ancient Egyptian cemetery in Tel-el-Deir, the Independent reported.

Unlike most ancient Egyptian treasures from the previous millennia that were plundered by thieves, the latest location discovered holds intact gold treasures, including copper coins, gold leaf and ancient miniature statues of gods such as Isis, Bastet and Horus.

Un damaged relics such as pottery, household spells and insect fighting were found along with treasure trove that shed more light on the customs and rituals that ancient Egyptians during this era practiced - Mohamed Ismail Khaled, General Secretary of the Supreme Council for Archaeology of Egypt said.

For decades, researchers have been conducting excavation projects at a location in Tel el-Deir near Lebanon, and have discovered this ancient cemetery.

In 2019, archaeologists found 7 gold coins dating back to the Byzantine period (284 to 641 AD) and statues engraved with the name of King Psamtik II of the 26th Dynasty.

Excavations over the years have reached their peak when a large cemetery was discovered in 2022, dating back to 644 to 525 BC.

This cemetery dates back to the late Middle Ages of ancient Egypt, and was the burial place of many types of people, from the common people to the rich.

At this location, researchers have previously discovered small containers of organs - containing the organs of dead people during the process of naming.

The tombs here are built with bricks and mud for the common people and with limestone for the rich.

Notably, archaeologists have also excavated 38 copper coins in a pottery vessel at the site dating back to the Ptolemaic Dynasty, which lasted for several hundred years after the cemetery was built between 305 and 30 AD.

Egyptian archaeologists say that, along with this discovery, the architectural layout of the excavated complex could lead to a re-determination of the age of an important period for the ancient Egyptian city of Damietta.

In general, the excavated artifacts shed more light on the ancient Egyptian handicrafts as well as their ability to access materials through trade.

These findings suggest that Damietta was an important commercial center during a significant period of ancient Egypt's history.
