According to Sputnik, the Syrian government and its allies won a victory, connecting the highway connecting the city of Deir ez-Zor to Palmyra citadel through the town of As Sukhnah. The road was previously under the control of IS rebels.
Governor Deir ez-Zor said that the road connection will help convoys of vehicles carrying food and fuel to the city to meet daily needs.
On September 5, the Syrian army broke the western perimeter of the city of Deir ez-Zor and entered the base of the 137th Brigade. On September 9, the Syrian army, backed by the Russian air force, broke the airspace around the airport, where more than 1,000 Syrian soldiers have been stranded since January this year.
According to Sputnik, Syrian military operations to push IS out of Deir ez-Zor province are still underway.
The IS has blockaded the city of Deir ez-Zor since 2014. Since then, food and other essential products can only be transported by helicopter.
