Free tuition, a support for students in flood-hit areas of Quang Ninh

The decision to exempt 100% of tuition fees for students in Quang Ninh province is a great joy for thousands of families.

On September 7, Typhoon Yagi made landfall, causing severe damage to the Quang Ninh region. The small house of Ms. Lieu Thi Hoan (born in 1995) in Lan De village, Vu Oai commune, Ha Long city suffered serious damage: the kitchen, bathroom and pigsty collapsed, the main roof was blown off.

On September 9, heavy rain caused Ms. Hoan's house to be deeply flooded. All of her belongings, from the refrigerator, washing machine to her children's books and school supplies, were swept away by the water.

Ms. Hoan is from a poor family, in poor health, and both husband and wife do not have stable jobs. Faced with the prospect of painful loss, her only hope is that her children can continue to go to school and not miss out on the future.

Sharing with reporters about the resolution to support 100% of tuition fees of the People's Council of Quang Ninh province, Ms. Hoan could not hide her emotions: "The storm and flood took everything away, but fortunately no one in the family was harmed. Despite the difficulties, the children's education is always the top priority. Thanks to the tuition exemption policy, my family feels very comforted, helping to reduce some of the current burden.

Previously, thanks to the support of the Board of Directors of Vu Oai Primary and Secondary School, the two children were also provided with textbooks and clothes to continue going to school."

Not only Ms. Hoan’s family, many other students at Vu Oai Primary and Secondary School are also facing serious consequences from natural disasters. According to statistics from the Board of Directors, out of a total of 299 students at the school, up to 55 families suffered serious damage after the storm.

Ms. Hoang Thi Hai Yen, Principal of the school, shared: "The tuition exemption policy is a very timely support, not only helping children worry less but also making teachers feel more secure in teaching. What is more valuable is the spirit of sharing of the local government, showing that humanity always overcomes all difficulties and floods."

On September 23, at the 21st session of the 14th term People's Council of Quang Ninh province, term 2021-2026, an important resolution was passed. Accordingly, the province will support 100% of tuition fees for students from preschool to high school, including students of continuing education centers in the 2024-2025 school year.

This policy was introduced to promptly share the burden with parents, helping students continue to go to school in difficult conditions after the storm.

In the 2024-2025 school year, Quang Ninh province will have 631 educational institutions with more than 365,000 students. Of these, nearly 244,000 students from 165,000 households will benefit from this tuition-free policy with a total estimated budget of VND167 billion.

This policy not only helps reduce financial burdens but also motivates students to be confident in their studies, affirming Quang Ninh's efforts in ensuring that all students have the opportunity to study, regardless of difficult circumstances after natural disasters.
