South Korea's National Assembly passes bill to appoint special prosecutor to investigate President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Reuters reported that South Korean lawmakers on December 10 passed a bill to appoint a special prosecutor to investigate President Yoon Suk Yeol's attempt to impose martial law.

Yonhap also said that on December 10, the South Korean National Assembly passed a bill authorizing a permanent special prosecutor to investigate allegations against President Yoon Suk Yeol related to his imposition of martial law last week.

The bill calls for an investigation into President Yoon Suk Yeol, former Defense Minister Kim Yong Hyun, Army Chief of Staff Gen. Park An Su and other officials involved in declaring martial law.

The bill was passed by the South Korean National Assembly with 210 votes in favor, 63 votes against and 14 abstentions.

Prime Minister Han Duck Soo, counterintelligence chief Yeo In Hyung and former leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) Choo Kyung Ho are also on the list of those under investigation.

The president will not be able to veto a bill on a permanent special prosecutor as he can with investigations by regular special prosecutors, Yonhap noted. However, the president can delay the appointment of a permanent special prosecutor.
