A Korean Navy's maritime patrol plane crashed at 1:43 p.m. (local time) on May 29, near a military base in Pohang City, southern Vietnam.
The Navy confirmed that a P-3C maritime patrol aircraft took off from the air base in Pohang to conduct a training mission at 1:43 p.m., then had an accident and crashed into the vicinity for unknown reasons, the South Korean Navy said in a press release.
The plane was carrying four people at the time, the statement said. Three bodies were found at the scene of the crash.
The Navy later confirmed that two of the four crew members were killed, but their identities are still being verified.
Previously, Yonhap news agency quoted local officials as saying that the plane crashed in a mountainous area on the east coast of South Korea. A witness said he saw smoke rising from the suspected location of the plane crash.
Rescue and investigation work is still being urgently deployed at the scene. This is the first accident recorded involving a P-3C aircraft of the Korean armed forces.
