According to ANSA news agency, the incident occurred on the evening of December 11 in the town of Ravanusa, 11,000 people, near the city of Agrigento in southwestern Sicily, Italy, famous for its Greek temples. A 4-storey apartment building collapsed and caught fire, believed to be caused by a natural gas pipeline explosion.
Firefighters quickly extinguished the fire and began digging through the rubble to search for the missing people and saved the two women. According to information from the authorities, at least 4 victims were identified as dead and 5 others are still missing.
The explosion also caused fire and damage to surrounding buildings, forcing 50 people to evacuate.
The head of Ravanusa town, Mr. Carmello D'Angelo, has called on all people with shovel tools and excavators to join in the search and rescue efforts.
