According to Bangkok Post, Thailand's Minister of Health Somsak Thepsutin confirmed that the disease has now been classified as an endemic disease. Although the number of infections is still high, he emphasized that most cases only have mild symptoms.
From January 1 to May 10, Thailand recorded a total of 53,676 cases of COVID-19 and 16 deaths. Bangkok is the locality that recorded the highest number of infections with 16,723 cases, peaking at the week from April 27 to March 3 with 14,349 cases, including two deaths. Some other provinces also have significant cases, such as Chon buri with 1,177 cases, Nonthaburi recorded 866 cases and Rayong with 553 cases.
However, the positive signal is that the number of new cases has decreased to 12,543 in the week from May 4 to 10.
Somsak said the recent increase in infections was largely due to seasonal factors and large gatherings.
COVID-19 is now a year-round disease. Although easily spread, the severity of the disease has decreased significantly. There is no need to panic, but people need to be vigilant and follow public health measures, such as wearing masks, he said.
The Minister also recommended that people conduct quick tests if they have suspected symptoms such as fever, cough, sore throat or fatigue. In case the results are positive, people with the disease need to isolate themselves, wear masks, avoid contact with others - especially the elderly, pregnant women and people with underlying diseases, and maintain proper personal hygiene. Cases with severe symptoms should go to medical facilities for timely treatment.
Mr. Somsak emphasized that staying vigilant, along with properly implementing prevention instructions, is a key factor to effectively deal with the current epidemic situation.
