CNN reported that on the evening of February 15 (local time), at least 15 people were killed in a pedal kick at a train station in New Dehli (India). Among the victims were 10 women and 3 children.
Deputy member of Dehli Police Department, Mr. KPS Malhotra, said that the cause of the incident was due to the large number of passengers at the station while the two trains arrived late. The situation was out of control for about 10 to 15 minutes, Mr. Malhotra said.
Many in the crowd are said to be en route to Maha Kumbh Mela, the world's largest religious festival, taking place in the city of prayagraj.
In an article on X on February 16, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: I would like to express my condolences to the families who lost loved ones and pray for the injured to recover soon. The government is supporting those affected.
Indian Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw also expressed his regret, saying that 4 trains had been mobilized to evacuate passengers and the situation was now under control.
Maha Kumbh Mela is considered the biggest pilgrimage festival of Hinduism. About 400 million people are expected to attend the six-week riverside festival in prayagraj.
