The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization has officially added 25 new heritages to the world heritage list.

According to Xinhua News Agency, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced on July 28 (local time) that it had added 25 new heritages to the world heritage list at the 48th session of the World Heritage Committee held in Busan (South Korea).

Among the newly registered heritages, there are 19 cultural heritages, 5 natural heritages and 1 mixed heritage, bringing the total number of world heritages to 1,273.

The three locations recorded under emergency procedures include: Boma - Badingilo migration landscape in South Sudan, the castles on Mount Amel in Lebanon and the Sebastia relic site in Palestine.

All 3 are also among the 6 locations added to the list of world heritage sites threatened this year.

The application of this mechanism to 3 locations in the same session shows that the number of heritages being threatened in areas affected by conflict and instability is increasing. This reflects the Committee's determination to expand the protection and recognition of heritage by the international community before it is too late," UNESCO said.

This year's session also marks the first time that Comoros, Sao Tome and Principe and South Sudan have heritage listed in the world heritage list. The number of member countries of the World Heritage Convention that have not yet had their heritage listed has decreased to 23 out of a total of 196 member countries.

One of the highlights of the meeting was the listing of Normandy (France) landing sites as memorials.

This complex consists of 6 areas, stretching about 80 km along the coast of Normandy, associated with the Allied landing on June 6, 1944 - the opening of Operation Overlord.

This campaign opened the Western front, creating an important turning point towards liberating Western Europe from Nazi German occupation in World War II.

Since 2023, the world heritage list has added this item to honor sites associated with historical events that countries and communities want to preserve.
