VNA reported that on January 14, Ambassador Do Hung Viet, Head of the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations, chaired a meeting and informed the international press in New York, USA about the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam.
The event was attended by the Press and Communications Office (MALU) of the United Nations Secretariat and a large number of representatives from more than 20 major international news agencies, including Reuters, CNBC, Le Monde, Al Jazeera, NHK, Nikkei, Kyodo News, Asahi Shimbun, Xinhua News Agency, CCTV, RIA Novosti, TASS, SABC News...
Speaking at the meeting, Ambassador Do Hung Viet gave an overview of the preparations for the 14th Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, affirming that this is an important event in summarizing 40 years of Doi Moi, evaluating the results of implementing the Resolution of the 13th Congress and determining the goals and orientations for national development in the next period.
The Ambassador highlighted a number of noteworthy new points in the documents of this congress, including "3 strategic breakthroughs" to bring the country forward strongly in the new era - including completing the institutional framework, developing human resources and accelerating infrastructure development; establishing a new growth model taking science, technology, innovation and digital transformation as the main driving force; identifying the private economy as the most important driving force of the economy; identifying environmental protection along with socio-economic development as the central task.
Regarding foreign affairs, Ambassador Do Hung Viet said that the 14th Congress will for the first time identify foreign affairs, promote international integration along with national defense and security as a key and regular task; and affirmed that Vietnam will continue to firmly adhere to the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, friendship, cooperation and development; multilateralization and diversification of foreign relations; equality, mutual benefit; being a reliable friend, partner and active and responsible member of the international community; ensuring the highest national and ethnic interests on the basis of the basic principles of international law and the United Nations Charter.
On this occasion, Ambassador Do Hung Viet also shared some updated information about the socio-economic development situation and foreign affairs achievements of Vietnam in 2025.
Answering questions from international news agencies about Vietnam's priorities at the United Nations in 2026, Ambassador Do Hung Viet affirmed that Vietnam continues to strongly support multilateralism and the central role of the United Nations in the global governance system; advocates participating more proactively and actively in solving global common challenges, including striving to well assume the role of Chairman of the Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) in May-April 2026.
The meeting between the Permanent Mission of Vietnam to the United Nations and the international press took place in an open atmosphere, creating an opportunity for press and media agencies based in New York to learn more about the 14th National Congress of the Communist Party of Vietnam, its achievements in all aspects as well as Vietnam's foreign policy orientations and priorities in the coming time.
