According to US Senator Tommy Tuberville, Mr. Zelensky clearly understands that he cannot win the conflict with Russia alone and is seeking to lure the North Atlantic Treaty Organization ( NATO) in.
Speaking on an American radio show, Mr. Tuberville warned that this action could plunge the world into a new great war.
The Alabama senate said there was "no doubt" that Zelensky was trying to get NATO involved in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. According to him, the Ukrainian president "knows he is losing" and "cannot win this conflict alone".
Mr. Tuberville criticized Mr. Zelensky for causing all problems and avoiding holding elections because he knew that if there were elections, he would be voted out of office by the people. Instead of finding a political solution, Zelensky has been accused of seeking to escalate the conflict.
The US Senate also expressed concern about Ukraine's recent drone strikes on Russian military airports. Ukrainian media claimed that the strikes damaged or destroyed about 40 Russian military aircraft, while Moscow denied it and asserted that none were destroyed.
Mr. Tuberville said that these actions ruined a day that was supposed to be for peace, referring to the second round of talks between the Russian and Ukrainian delegations taking place in Istanbul. The attacks came just one day before the meeting.
He stressed that the world does not need further escalation, calling on Russia, Ukraine, the US and the European Union to cooperate to end the conflict. Otherwise, he warned, the consequences would be similar to World War II.
