President Joe Biden praised Vice President Kamala Harris as "a great partner and public servant, filled with integrity, courage and character," according to a statement released by the White House.
AP said this was President Biden's first public comment after former US President Donald Trump's victory in the 2024 US presidential election.
Mr. Biden also noted that Ms. Harris joined the White House campaign under "extraordinary circumstances." Previously, the Democratic presidential candidate was President Joe Biden. However, he withdrew from the race 108 days before the November 5 election amid increasing pressure within the Democratic Party, especially after Mr. Biden's televised debate with Mr. Trump.
In the statement, Mr. Biden added, Ms. Harris "stepped up and led a historic campaign that demonstrated what can be achieved when guided by a strong moral compass and a clear vision for a freer, fairer nation with boundless opportunity for all Americans."
President Biden is scheduled to address the nation at 11 a.m. ET on November 7. This speech will be Biden's first public appearance since Donald Trump's victory over Kamala Harris.
According to the campaign, Donald Trump has accepted President Biden's invitation to meet at the White House to discuss the presidential transition process.
Steven Cheung, Trump's communications director, said the date of the meeting has not been set but will be "shortly." Cheung also said Trump "very much appreciated" Biden's congratulatory call on November 6.
