Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared that Brazil does not want a "new cold war" and called on the US administration to treat all countries equally. The statement was made at a press conference in New Delhi, when he concluded his 3-day visit to India.
Mr. Lula da Silva said that he wanted to send a direct message to US President Donald Trump that Brazil does not want to interfere in the internal affairs of any country. According to him, it is important that all countries are treated fairly in international relations.
The South American national leader is expected to meet with Mr. Trump in Washington in the first week of March 2026. Mr. Lula da Silva said the agenda will include issues of trade, immigration, investment and cooperation between universities.
Accordingly, Mr. Lula da Silva disagrees with the tariffs imposed by Mr. Trump, as well as the US stance regarding the war in Gaza. He also has a different view from the US administration regarding the arrest of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro.
However, the Brazilian President declined to comment on the US Supreme Court's ruling rejecting many tariffs on global goods into the US. After this ruling, Mr. Trump said he would replace it with a 15% tariff under another law.
Mr. Lula da Silva expressed his belief that relations between the US and Brazil will be in a "better position" after the upcoming meeting. His statement showed his desire to maintain dialogue and promote bilateral cooperation, despite the differences between the two governments.
