Speaking to global leaders at the United Nations General Assembly (UN) on September 22 (local time), French President Emmanuel Macron called on the international community to reaffirm its commitment to international law and the UN system, in the context of the world continuing to face many conflicts and disagreements.
The French President mentioned the changes in the current international environment and said that countries are facing a choice between what he calls the return of "jungle law" and maintaining a civilized international society; and called on countries to be steadfast in the principles of international order, not to let the abuse of power affect the sovereignty of countries.
Referring to the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the French President proposed that the two countries agree to temporarily suspend military operations targeting civil and energy infrastructure. Mr. Macron said that the conflict has caused damage to civil infrastructure and human rights violations. France supports the two sides implementing this proposal.
Regarding the situation in the Gaza Strip, President Macron mentioned the role of the international community in the face of the difficulties facing the Palestinian people. He said that peace declarations need to be accompanied by ensuring that humanitarian aid can be delivered to the people.
In his speech, the French President also informed about the development of artificial intelligence (AI), in the context of risks related to this technology raised by many leaders at the UN General Assembly.
According to Mr. Macron, countries need to strengthen cooperation, mobilize resources to develop and share an advanced open source AI model, thereby improving technological autonomy. The proposal was made in the context that the US and China are playing a major role in the global AI field.
