According to Xinhua News Agency, US President Donald Trump on August 6 (local time) signed an executive order applying a minimum import price and a 15% tariff to products made from polysilicon - an important material in the production of semiconductor chips and solar panels.
The White House statement said that the minimum import price is regulated at 21 USD/kg for polysilicon and 100 USD/kg for polysilicon ingots and polysilicon wafers.
New trade measures are expected to take effect from December 4, 2026.
Mr. Trump also directed the US Department of Commerce to develop a program to encourage investment in domestic raw polysilicon production and related products in the next stages.
White House information documents stated that the measures are aimed at creating a level playing field for US manufacturers for strategic goods, encouraging bringing these industries back to the US, while protecting national security, the foundation of the defense industry and defense-related industries.
According to the above document, the proportion of US polysilicon production capacity globally has decreased from 50% in 2005 to below 2% in 2024.
