According to AFP, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the idea of holding elections, and said that conducting voting in the context of war posed a major risk and could lead to divisions in Ukrainian society.
Previously, former Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov on August 18 (local time) called on the country to find ways to restore the election process.
In a video posted on social networks, Mr. Fedorov said that Ukraine needs to build a legal, safe and practical mechanism to organize elections even in the event of prolonged conflict.
This move is considered a noteworthy development for President Zelensky's administration. However, Mr. Fedorov has not provided information about the possibility of participating in politics.
Ukraine imposed martial law after the conflict with Russia broke out in February 2022. Current regulations do not allow elections during martial law.
The former Ukrainian Defense Minister was dismissed in July. This later led to protests in support of Mr. Fedorov. During his tenure, he promoted military reform as the force faced many difficulties and consolidated domestic weapons production capabilities.
