Since the March 2011 uprising against President Bashar al-Assad's regime broke out into a civil war with a series of factions killing each other, many historical sites, potential cities, architectural masterpieces that have existed for centuries have been wiped out.
Even in places where the war has officially ended such as Homs, Aleppo and Raqqa, the city is still in a state of severe devastation, rebuilding almost non-existent, people have to patch up collapsed houses in the best way they can.
Damascus Capital Region: Paradise Turns Hell
Damascus is one of the oldest cities in the world, founded in the 3rd millennium BC. The ancient city recognized by UNESCO as a world heritage despite escaping the devastation of war, the suburbs of Damascus were devastated.
Dong Ghouta, an area surrounded by rebels in the northern suburbs of Damascus, has been hit by dozens of bombs since mid-February, when the Syrian army resumed its rebel attacks.
Aleppo: The broken heart ofcommerce
Once a commercial center of Syria, Aleppo has transformed from a bustling city with more than 2 million people to a pile of ruins, stained with blood.
The battle in eastern Aleppo, especially in the final stages, was one of the fiercest. Thousands of people died, hundreds of thousands of people fled the city.
Since the government liberated the city from rebels in December 2016, the dilapidated city has been gradually rebuilt. Thousands of people have returned, trying to scoop up what is left. The government is also building a power line in the desert area between Damascus and Aleppo. But most areas still need to be rebuilt on a large scale.
Homs: Capital of the revolution
Once known as the "city of black and white blocks" because of its unique architecture, Syria's third largest city is more known as the "capital of the revolution" after the massive protests against Mr. Assad in 2011.
The government recaptured Homs from rebels in 2014 after battles that destroyed the city's multicultural relics. Nearly four years later, the Baba Amr area, the focus of the uprising, is still a pile of rubble.
Raqqa: Beautiful city becomes the capital of IS
Raqqa was the capital of the self-proclaimed Islamic State of IS province in Syria and was the last remaining stronghold of IS in the country, before the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces re-occupied it in October 2017.
During the 4 years of being controlled by IS, schools were banned, historical sites were destroyed, and people were chopped off their heads in the city's main square.
Months after its liberation, Raqqa remains a scene of devastation, chaos and devastation.
