Typhoon No. 3 Yagi claimed the lives of two people and injured 92 others, Chinese authorities reported on September 7. The storm also left more than 800,000 Chinese households without power.
On the afternoon of September 6, the latest super typhoon in the South China Sea hit Wenchang City on Hainan Island, with wind speeds reaching about 245 km/h near the center of the storm. The National Meteorological Administration of China said Yagi was the strongest autumn typhoon to ever hit China. About 420,000 residents in Hainan were evacuated before the super typhoon hit the island.
About half a million other people in China's Guangdong province were evacuated before Typhoon Yagi made its second landfall in Xuwen county on the night of September 6.
According to Bloomberg, on September 7, China's Haikou meteorological observatory downgraded the storm warning from red to orange as storm No. 3 moved further away from the city.
Due to the impact of super typhoon No. 3 in the East Sea, in Hong Kong (China), more than 270 people were forced to seek shelter at temporary shelters of the government on September 6 and more than 100 flights were canceled due to the super typhoon. Heavy rain and strong winds uprooted dozens of trees, trading activities on the stock market, banking services and schools were also suspended.
On September 7, Typhoon No. 3 Yagi is making landfall in northern Vietnam after passing through the Gulf of Tonkin. Typhoon No. 3 is considered "one of the strongest typhoons in the region in the past decade". According to the latest typhoon forecast from the Chinese Meteorological Agency, when approaching Vietnam, Typhoon No. 3 Yagi's maximum wind speed has slightly decreased from a level 4 storm to a level 3 storm, reaching 187 km/h.
Meanwhile, the flash news about storm No. 3 released at 12 noon on September 7 by the Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the center of storm No. 3 Yagi is at about 20.7 degrees North latitude; 107.3 degrees East longitude, in the sea area of Quang Ninh - Hai Phong. The strongest wind of storm No. 3 is at level 13 (134-149km/h), gusting to level 16.
Vietnam National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting predicts that in the next 3 hours, storm No. 3 Yagi will move west-northwest at a speed of about 15-20km/h.
Typhoon Yagi formed in the sea east of the Philippine archipelago on September 1. It was a tropical storm when it swept across Luzon, the Philippines' most populous island. The storm left at least 16 people dead and 17 others missing in the Philippines, mostly due to landslides and widespread flooding.
Yagi strengthened into a super typhoon while moving over the South China Sea , becoming one of the world's strongest storms in 2024 after Atlantic Category 5 Hurricane Beryl and the strongest storm in the Pacific basin in 2024.
