Politico reported that on February 12, the Ukrainian Intelligence Agency announced a shocking discovery: the head of Kiev's Counter-Terrorism Center is actually a Russian spy.
The head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU), Mr. Vasyl Malyuk, personally arrested the suspect. Although his identity has not been disclosed, Mr. Malyuk said that the suspect is a man, accused of working for the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) for money and ideological reasons.
The SBU chief stressed that the suspect will face charges of treason.
To gather evidence of the leak of top secret information to Moscow, the SBU secretly hacked into all of the suspect’s digital devices and monitored them 24/7. “We practically lived with him. That’s how we recorded the entire process of him passing information to the Russians,” Malyuk said.
According to Politico, the suspect has held the position of head of the SBU's Counter-Terrorism Center since 2016. If convicted by the court, this man could receive a life sentence.
According to the SBU, the suspect was recruited by the FSB in 2018. The man is believed to have been acting as a spy awaiting orders until December 2024, when Russia made contact again while he was under surveillance.
The SBU also said that the suspects were former Ukrainian officials living in Russia who had participated in the Maidan protests in late 2013 and early 2014.
Mr. Malyuk announced that the internal cleansing process would continue, and said that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had been fully informed about this counterintelligence operation.
