According to the decree posted on the website of the President of Ukraine on September 17 (local time), the task of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine was officially assigned to Mr. Anton Kovalsky.
Before being appointed, Mr. Kovalsky held the position of Head of the Khmelnitsky Regional Procuracy.
The personnel appointment decision took place after many days of Ukrainian public opinion not knowing who is in charge of running the Attorney General's Office, forcing the parliamentary committee to convene the entire senior leadership of this agency to clarify.
The upheaval originated on September 4, when the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO) of this country launched a campaign to crack down on a criminal organization led by a deputy head of a unit of the Attorney General's Office, accused of protecting a network of fraud and money laundering switchboards.
The private residence of former Attorney General Ruslan Kravchenko was also searched at that time, causing him to submit his resignation on September 7.
However, on the morning of September 14, Mr. Kravchenko suddenly signed an indictment targeting NABU Director Semyon Krivonos and a person close to SAPO head Alexander Klimenko, and announced that he had left Ukraine on business trips.
Immediately after this move, President Zelensky submitted a resolution dismissing Mr. Kravchenko to Parliament, and at the same time took advantage of the expanded authority under martial law to issue a decree dismissing him.
The Ukrainian Parliament voted to pass the dismissal decision on September 15 before President Zelensky signed a decree completing procedures on the same day.
