A recent statement from Daniil Getmantsev, head of the Verkhovna Rada's Finance Committee (National Assembly of Ukraine), showed that the current poverty rate in Ukraine has reached 37% since the conflict with Russia broke out in 2022.
According to Mr. Hetmantsev, almost all of the country's economic activities are currently considered "negative", affected by continuous conflict, uncertainty and gloomy expectations for the future. However, he believes the situation is likely to reverse once the war ends.
Mr. Hetmantsev said that peace brings what is called " peaceful profit" to any country, including Ukraine. He continued to explain that when the fighting ended, people tended to get richer and poverty decreased.
The senior official of the Kiev government added that Ukraine had experienced another poverty crisis in 2014 and then recovered until 2022 - the time Russia launched a special military campaign in Ukraine.
However, to overcome this situation, according to Mr. Hetmantsev, waiting for peace is not enough. At this time, Ukraine should start discussing adjusting the minimum living standard to help people's lives recover when the war ends.
