A shooting occurred in the Teotihuacan pyramid area near Mexico City, killing 1 person and injuring 4 others.

According to Mexican authorities, the gunman shot dead a Canadian woman and injured 4 others before committing suicide. Among the injured were two Colombians, one Canadian and one Russian citizen.

Mexican state security officials said that functional forces are coordinating investigations at the archaeological site, and affirmed that the situation has been controlled and the area is now stable again.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said she had contacted the Canadian Embassy, and expressed deep condolences to the victims and their families. The Canadian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has not given an immediate response to the incident.

Teotihuacan was one of the important cultural centers of the Central American region in pre-Spanish times and is now a popular tourist destination in Mexico, attracting about 1.8 million visitors per year.

The incident occurred in the context of Mexico preparing to co-host the 2026 World Cup with the US and Canada, an event expected to attract millions of international tourists. This has caused security issues at tourist and cultural destinations to receive much attention.
