Vietnam men's volleyball needs to improve performance

HOÀI VIỆT |

While female colleagues of Vietnamese volleyball are achieving recent sublime results, the Men's Volleyball Team is under a lot of pressure because they have not achieved good results.

Which location is in Southeast Asia?

On July 7, the Vietnam men's volleyball team will travel to the Philippines to participate in the 2025 Southeast Asian International Volleyball Championship - SEA V.League 2025. In the past 2 years, the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team has been given the opportunity to perform international missions. In particular, we want to affirm our position in the top group of Southeast Asia, so we should actively participate in the SEA V.League.

Vietnamese men's volleyball has its opportunities. If we invest well, men's volleyball will be able to compete for a good ranking in Southeast Asia. However, the investment must be focused and the most optimal plan must be developed, Mr. Tran Duc Phan, Vice President of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation, analyzed.

In terms of qualifications, the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team is capable of holding a position in the 2 strongest teams in Southeast Asia. However, why we have not achieved this is a question that the Vietnam Volleyball Federation cannot explain. The SEA V.League is considered the Southeast Asian Volleyball Championship for miniature tournaments when attracting the 4 strongest teams including: Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines. From this year, the tournament will have an additional Cambodian men's team.

According to professional statistics, the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team is ranked 3rd in the first leg of the 2023 SEA V.League and second in the second leg of the tournament. In 2024, we will be 4th in both tournaments. Notably, coach Tran Dinh Tien's player lost all matches at SEA V.League 2024.

General Secretary of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation - Mr. Le Tri Truong - discussed: "This year, the SEA V.League 2025 has 5 men's teams competing. We predict the competition will be fierce, so the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team will have to make efforts and compete with the most focused spirit to achieve the best results".

The target is still the 33rd SEA Games

Similar to female colleagues, the players of the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team are performing international missions to prepare professionally for the 33rd SEA Games. The 4 men's teams of Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, and the Philippines also did the same as us.

Coach Tran Dinh Tien once discussed that every Vietnamese male player has good expertise, but we still lack a decision to solve difficult situations in important matches. This is clearly seen at the SEA V.League 2024.

The Vietnamese players played very tightly against their opponents but ran out of steam at the end and lost the match. The above problem was repeated for the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team at the recent AVC Nations Cup 2025.

At the 31st SEA Games (May 2022) in Vietnam, the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team entered the final but lost to Indonesia, receiving the Silver Medal. At the 32nd SEA Games (May 2023), coach Tran Dinh Tien and his team won against Thailand in the third-place match, receiving the Bronze Medal.

With the 33rd SEA Games, the volleyball department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) and the Vietnam Volleyball Federation have received the performance target from the leaders of the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports, which is that the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team must win a medal.

The Vietnam men's volleyball team will participate in 3 international tournaments of the 2025 training session including AVC Champions League 2025 (May 2025), AVC Nations Cup 2025 (June 2025) and the upcoming SEA V.League 2025 (July 2025).

The 3 tournaments are 3 different professional characteristics and we believe that the coaching staff knows which weaknesses need to be overcome in professional preparation. When the Vietnam Men's Volleyball Team returns in the next training phase, the adjustment will aim to improve their expertise" - Mr. Le Tri Truong added.

The Vietnam men's volleyball team will compete in the first round of the 2025 SEA V.League in the Philippines from July 9 to 13. After that, the second round of the tournament will be held from July 16 to July 20.
