This year, the 2026 World Team Chess Championship - Olympiad 2026 will compete in Uzbekistan, from September 15 to September 28.
The Vietnam Chess Federation and the chess department (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports) have developed professional plans to prepare to participate in this tournament. Olympiad is a traditional tournament, with the highest professional value in team competition of the International Federation of Chess (FIDE). The tournament takes place in a 2-year cycle.
At the 2024 Olympiad held in Hungary, the Vietnamese chess team participated with forces including Le Quang Liem, Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son, Tran Tuan Minh, Le Tuan Minh, Banh Gia Huy (male) and Pham Le Thao Nguyen, Vo Thi Kim Phung, Luong Phuong Hanh, Le Thanh Tu and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong (female).
At the end of the tournament, the Vietnamese men's team ranked 25th while the women's team ranked 23rd.
At that time, the Vietnamese chess team won 1 bronze medal at the table according to the achievements of grandmaster Le Tuan Minh. According to FIDE regulations, the competition results of Olympiad 2026 will help chess teams have the opportunity to receive a ticket to participate in the 2027 World Cup.
Vietnamese chess will calculate appropriate forces to compete in Olympiad 2026 and at the same time move towards creating opportunities for young players with good expertise to compete and accumulate expertise.
At the 2024 Olympiad, 2 young chess players Banh Gia Huy and Bach Ngoc Thuy Duong participated in this tournament for the first time. At that time, the Indian men's and women's teams both won the championship cup in 2 events. Chess players participating in the Olympiad will compete in standard chess.
