Vice President and General Secretary of the Vietnam Chess Federation - Mr. Nguyen Minh Thang said: "The representative of Vietnam participating in the 2025 World Cup is Le Quang Liem. We have an official place in the tournament.
The World Chess Federation (FIDE) has announced a list of 206 male players who will be officially allocated to the World Cup 2025 from October 30 to November 27.
Initially, Vietnamese chess was predicted to be able to win two official spots. In which, a spot will be received from the competition results of the Vietnam Men's Chess Team at the 2024 Olympiad World Team Championship. The remaining rankings were achieved thanks to Le Quang Liem's position in the world's top 20.
In fact, FIDE has changed the official regulations for giving away places according to the world rankings for the 2025 World Cup. The top 13 players will receive official tickets to this tournament. Le Quang Liem is not in the top 13 in the world, so we will not be able to participate in the 2025 World Cup from this result.
Therefore, Vietnamese chess will only have one place to participate in the 2025 World Cup according to the 2024 Olympiad achievements and the coaching staff gave Le Quang Liem a chance. At the 2025 World Cup, players will compete in standard flags.
In the FIDE rankings announced in early August, Le Quang Liem ranked 22nd in the world. The Vietnamese chess team had Pham Le Thao Nguyen compete in the 2025 Women's World Cup in July but were unsuccessful.
