On the evening of March 10, the Vietnamese women's team suffered a 0-4 defeat to the Japan women's team in the last match of the 2026 Women's Asian Cup group stage.
This result caused coach Mai Duc Chung's team to say goodbye to the tournament early, and at the same time closed the hope of winning a ticket to the Women's World Cup for the second time.
After the Vietnamese women's team stopped in the group stage of the 2026 Asian Women's Cup, coach Mai Duc Chung confirmed that he would withdraw from the position of head coach.
The contract between the coach born in 1951 and the Vietnam Football Federation ended after this tournament and he said this is also a suitable time to transfer the task to his successor.
Coach Mai Duc Chung shared that in football there are always wins and losses, and in his role as head of the coaching staff, he takes responsibility for the team's achievements. He also expressed his desire that the Vietnamese women's team will have a successor force with sufficient capacity to continue to develop in the coming period.
The veteran coach said that the change of coaching staff is an opportunity for the team to have new motivation. At the same time, he emphasized that Vietnamese women's football needs to continue to invest heavily in youth training, developing the movement in localities and schools to improve the quality of player sources for the national team in the future.
