Although considered the weakest team in the 2025 World Men's Volleyball Championship, the Philippines team made a historic victory in the tournament when they defeated Egypt with a score of 3-1.
Before the match, the home team was in 88th place on the FIVB rankings, 67 places behind their opponents. Not to mention, Egypt just had a convincing victory over Iran - a team in the top 15 in the world.
However, when playing at home with the support of nearly 20,000 spectators, the Philippines team played a brave match. They surprisingly won a dramatic 29-27 victory in the first set. Although Egypt managed to calm down to win set 2 with a score of 25-23, the game later leaning towards the home team.
Continuing the excitement of the Philippine players playing explosively, winning the remaining two sets with a score of 25-21 to end the match with explosive joy.
The brightest star in this feat was captain Bryan Bagunas when he scored 25 points. Meanwhile, the Egyptian side continuously made mistakes, especially in the serve and attack stages.
This victory not only brought pride to the Philippine volleyball team, but also the biggest ranking difference victory ever recorded at the World Championship.
In the remaining matches, Finland caused a big surprise when they defeated defending champion of the French Olympic with a score of 3-2 after a 5-set match, while Italy lost 2-3 to Belgium.
Iran won 3-1 against Cambodia to continue competing for a place in the round of 16. Serbia beat China 3-0 to keep their hopes of moving on.
Argentina beat South Korea 3-1, Ukraine beat Algeria 3-0 and Brazil had no difficulty overcoming the Czech Republic 3-0 to maintain their top spot.
