The old record was 4 minutes 18 seconds 10 of Tran Hung Nguyen himself.
This swimmer achieved the above results at SEA Games 31 held in 2022 in Vietnam.

Thus, with achievements at ASIAD 20, Tran Hung Nguyen simultaneously broke the National Record of Vietnamese swimming and the SEA Games Record in the 400m individual medley event.
In the final of this event at ASIAD 20, athlete Nguyen Quang Thuan finished 7th with a time of 4 minutes 18 seconds 57.
Winning the gold medal in the men's 400m individual medley at ASIAD 20 was Kojima Yumeki (Japan) with a time of 4 minutes 07 seconds 02. The result was recognized as a New Record at ASIAD.
By the end of September 22, the Vietnamese swimming team had not won a medal.
Today, swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang was withdrawn from the coaching staff's registration to compete in the 1,500m freestyle event despite having an initial list.
Huy Hoang will be focused on the 400m freestyle and 800m freestyle events to find opportunities to compete for medals.
