Lai Ly Huynh continued to compete in round 5 of the Ngu Duong Boi Chess Tournament 2026 in the afternoon of February 27. In round 5, the Vietnamese player competed against opponent Luu Bach Hoanh.
The two players focused on playing to find opportunities to get ahead, but the intellectual battle closed in a draw. In previous rounds, Lai Ly Huynh maintained good results.
The Vietnamese player was drawn into Group B of the tournament, along with opponents Quach Phung Dat, Luu Tu Kien, Luu Bach Hoanh. In round 2, Lai Ly Huynh defeated Luu Tu Kien. Next in round 3, Lai Ly Huynh and Luu Bach Hoanh kept a draw. In round 4, Lai Ly Huynh defeated Quach Phung Dat.
Continuing to achieve a draw in round 5 helped Lai Ly Huynh not lose in the group stage matches of the tournament.
The Ngu Duong Boi Chess Tournament 2026 has been competing in the qualifying round from January 2025 to select the 15 best Chinese chess players to participate in the final round.
In addition to 15 Chinese chess players, Lai Ly Huynh is the 16th person to be awarded a spot to participate in this final round. Ly Huynh was specially invited to participate in this year's final round of the tournament because he won the 2025 world championship.
The final round of this year's tournament is held from February 25th to March 1st. The organizers draw 16 players into 4 groups. Players will compete to select 1 player with the best performance in each group to receive a spot in the semi-finals.
