Liverpool striker Diogo Jota died in a serious car accident in Sanabria ( Spain) on the morning of July 3 local time.
Accompanying Jota on the trip was Andre Silva's younger brother, both of whom did not survive after the car had a flat tire, lost control and caught fire. Currently, the authorities have not determined who was driving the vehicle at the time of the accident.
According to information from the British press, Jota was advised not to travel by plane after a recent lung surgery. Instead, he chose to take a ferry from the port city of Santander to England. The two brothers were en route to the departure point of the Brittany Ferries ferry, scheduled to leave Spain on the afternoon of July 3 to Plymouth (UK) on the morning of July 4.
Diogo Jota's passing has left great pain for his family, fans and football world. Liverpool expressed their deep condolences, while Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo shared his condolences and affirmed that Jota "will always be with his loved ones".
The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) will observe a minute of silence in the match between the Spanish and Portuguese women's teams to commemorate the two brothers.
Having joined Liverpool since 2020, Jota has made 182 appearances, scored 65 goals and won many titles with the team, including the Premier League title last season. He also contributed greatly to helping the Portuguese team win the 2024-2025 Nations League.
Just a few days before the accident, Jota married his longtime girlfriend Rute Cardoso at a wedding ceremony held in his hometown of Porto. The couple has three children together and shared many happy moments on social media right before the incident.
