Focus on expertise
The Vietnam men's tennis team has officially gathered and practiced at a training center in Ho Chi Minh City, including players: Vu Ha Minh Duc, Nguyen Van Phuong, Pham La Hoang Anh, Dinh Viet Tuan Minh, Nguyen Minh Phat. The two tennis players Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang did not participate in this training session.
The coaching staff of the Vietnam Men's Tennis Team is practicing to compete in the Davis Cup Group 3 - Asia - Pacific region in 2025. Before the competition, athletes competed in a qualifying round and the best professional tennis player was selected.
Currently, the named athletes are all stable faces of Vietnamese men's tennis. We still have an important task to do towards competing in the 33rd - 2025 SEA Games, so we will have to prepare most carefully, said Mr. Nguyen Kim Cuong, head of tennis (Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports). The Vietnam men's tennis team will compete in this tournament in Bac Ninh from July 14 to 19.
In mid-April 2025, tennis players nationwide competed in the 2025 National Team Tennis Championship. The tournament is the most recent professional competition program (according to the national system) in which tennis players nationwide are allowed to compete.
After nearly 3 months, the Vietnam Tennis Team officially focused on doing the first international mission in 2025. In fact, the number of domestic tennis tournaments is scarce. Therefore, tennis players nationwide lack the opportunity to compete to improve their skills. Ly Hoang Nam and Trinh Linh Giang will not participate in the 2025 National Team Tennis Championship.
"We still carry out tournaments in the national system according to the set schedule. However, tennis is a sport that needs regular practice and skill training. When the number of tournaments is not large, it is inevitable that athletes will participate in some small sports, typically pickleball. The preparation of the National Tennis Team must still be guaranteed to meet requirements" - Mr. Kim Cuong added.
Finding the right person without Ly Hoang Nam
The Vietnamese tennis team has developed a plan to participate in the 33rd - 2025 SEA Games. Tennis player Ly Hoang Nam is almost certain to be absent from this tournament. In addition to Ly Hoang Nam, Vietnamese men's tennis leaves open the possibility of tennis player Trinh Linh Giang joining the squad.
Both players have switched to pickleball and have not participated in domestic tennis tournaments. In addition to them, tennis player Nguyen Dac Tien, although still participating in domestic tennis tournaments, has also started participating in pickleball tournaments.
Ly Hoang Nam is the only player of the Vietnam Tennis Team to have reached the men's singles finals at 3 consecutive SEA Games including the 30th SEA Games in 2019 (Winning Gold Medal), the 31st SEA Games in 2022 (Winning Gold Medal), and the 32nd SEA Games in 2023 (Winning Silver Medal).
In case Ly Hoang Nam does not participate in the 33rd SEA Games, the opportunity to compete for the medal of the Vietnam Tennis Team will be affected. The manager accepts the fact that players have to ensure their own lives, so it is difficult to focus on tennis to participate in many pickleball tournaments with better results and income.
