Malaysian government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil, who is also Minister of Communications, said that FIFA World Cup 2026 will be broadcast on many platforms, including free television via MyTV, as well as RTM Click and Unifi TV, to ensure comprehensive nationwide access.
He said that Unifi TV will broadcast live all 104 matches of the tournament, while RTM will replay most of the other matches, live or replay afterwards.
The government is committed to ensuring that all Malaysians can enjoy the FIFA World Cup 2026 comprehensively, legally and fully. To achieve this, the government has decided to cooperate with the private sector to ensure high broadcast quality and wide coverage.
I am pleased to announce that RTM and Unifi TV will be the official television stations broadcasting the FIFA World Cup 2026 in Malaysia," said Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.
Regarding the money spent to win broadcasting rights, Fahmi said that he did not directly participate in discussions with the copyright holder, FIFA. However, he emphasized that the Malaysian Government has approved and allocated 24 million Ringgit for this purpose. In addition, some other sponsors also participated in the purchase of World Cup broadcasting rights in Malaysia.
It is expected that Malaysia will soon officially announce the ownership of the World Cup copyright after the negotiations are completed.
Mr. Fahmi also said that public viewing events will also be held on a moderate scale at certain locations to increase the participation of fans.
He added that the government has emphasized the importance of complying with anti-copyright regulations for all content related to the tournament.
He said: "All parties are called upon to act responsibly, and enforcement measures will continue to be strengthened against any violations.
To date, more than 175 countries and territories have owned the broadcasting rights for the 2026 World Cup. This tournament will take place in the US, Canada and Mexico from June 11 to July 19.
In Southeast Asia, 6 countries already own the tournament rights such as Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia and Timor-Leste. After Malaysia, Thailand is also likely to soon finalize negotiations to bring the tournament to fans.
