Big Six battle for a place in the Champions League
In a Football World, perhaps not all tournaments in Europe's top national championship system have fierce competition for tickets to the Champions League like the Premier League.
The tournament always has at least 6 standing teams competing for 4 official spots to participate in the most prestigious tournament at the club level.
Looking at the system of other tournaments such as Spain, Germany, France... fans easily see that the battle for a place in the Champions League is almost predictable. This season is no exception, hopefully the competition in Serie A will be a bit exciting.
When Man City became a force in the Premier League, the concept of "Big Four" (including Man United, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea) was replaced. In addition to Tottenham's growth, the group has now become the "Big Six".
Only the top four teams in the Premier League have tickets to the Champions League. There is another, narrower path, which is to win the Champions League or win the Europa League.
Even though they started the season with 2 draws and 1 loss, Liverpool are still highly appreciated - along with Man City, for their ticket to the Champions League. That is thanks to the force they have in hand, as well as the achievements in recent seasons. The remaining spots are shared equally between the remaining "Big Six".
In this group, Man United is showing signs of weakness, even though they have just won against Liverpool. If the quality of the squad is not improved and internal problems are not resolved, the prospect of not being able to participate in the Champions League for the second consecutive season is completely possible.
The remaining teams are also making efforts in each match to create the biggest advantage in this fierce race.
Europa League and Europa Conference League appearances are equally tense
According to the regulations, the Premier League will have 2 teams participating in the Europa League: the 5th place team and the FA Cup champion. The English League Cup champions will have a ticket to the Conference League play-off (in case the FA Cup champions qualify for the above two tournaments, that ticket will be for the team ranked 7th in the Premier League rankings).
In theory, the two teams in the "Big Six" group have the advantage of taking the remaining spots of these two tournaments, because of the format as well as UEFA regulations.
In a tournament with high professional quality and surprises like the Premier League, the "lower" teams have the opportunity to compete for a place in the European Cup, such as West Ham, Leicester City and could also be the "rich" of the emerging Newcastle.
The new season has just begun, but there have also been surprises, which has increased the drama, unpredictability, and fierceness of the race in the most attractive national championship on the planet.
