The host Thailand is determined to achieve a high ranking, possibly the No. 1 position at the 33rd SEA Games at home, so the ability of Vietnamese sports to defend the top spot in the overall group is not easy.

Be careful with your goals

In the first phase of this year, industry leaders will directly inspect and practice each National Sports Training Center in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Da Nang, Can Tho to fully grasp the number of troops and practical training for the task of attending the 33rd SEA Games.

"After checking and reviewing the force, we will report to the leaders of the Department of Physical Education and Sports. From there, there will be consultations with leaders of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism on the plan to participate in the 33rd SEA Games. Everyone is being very cautious because not only Vietnam, countries in the region, especially host Thailand, have been preparing very carefully for professional forces, said a representative of the High-performance Sports Department 1 (Department of Physical Education and Sports).

In the report on professional preparation at the 2024 Summary Conference and deployment of tasks for 2025 of the sports industry, the managers gave the preliminary figures that the sports teams set out to strive to win at the 33rd SEA Games as from 85 to more than 90 Gold Medals.

We have won first place overall at the 31st and 32nd SEA Games. However, based on the assessment and analysis of the force and the number of sports that Vietnamese sports can register for, at the 33rd SEA Games, Vietnamese sports have reserved to strive to be in the top 3 countries leading in medal achievements.

Know who you are

The 5 countries that have led the Gold Medals at the 32nd SEA Games (May 2023) are Vietnam (136), Thailand (108), Indonesia (87), Cambodia (81), Philippines (58). According to the forecast, in Thailand this year, the rankings of each country may change.

This time, host Thailand officially announced the competition of 50 sports, a total of 574 sets of medals. Before the competition begins, countries in the region have the opportunity to achieve their highest results.

Thailand is sure to maintain its own advantage and the host country is determined to conquer the No. 1 position in terms of achievements. After 18 years, Thailand continues to be the host of a SEA Games, the most recent time was in 2007.

Statistics show that the last time Thai sports topped the total medal table at the 2015 SEA Games in Singapore was 10 years ago. In the SEA Games held in 2017, 2019, 2022, 2023, Thai sports did not win the overall No. 1 position.

In June 2024, Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports Dang Ha Viet and a delegation of Vietnamese sports officials attended the first delegation leaders' conference of the 33rd SEA Games in Bangkok (Thailand).

Returning to Vietnam after the above Conference, Mr. Dang Ha Viet expressed that representatives of the participating countries are determined to win many Gold Medals at the upcoming Congress. The fact that host Thailand included 50 events in the competition program shows the diversity and each country has a suitable choice of subjects and content to register for the competition according to its ability to predict success.
