On March 27, Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee held a ceremony to celebrate the 80th anniversary of Vietnamese Sports Tradition Day (March 27, 1946 – March 27, 2026) and the 50th anniversary of Ho Chi Minh City's physical education and sports industry (1976-2026).
With the theme "Proud of tradition - steadily moving towards the future", this is an opportunity for the Ho Chi Minh City sports industry to look back at a journey of inheritance, effort, innovation and breakthrough. In 50 years of development, Ho Chi Minh City sports has produced many famous athletes, achieving high achievements in international arenas such as Truong Quoc Thang (bicycle), Ly Duc (bodybuilding), Nguyen Tien Minh (badminton), Doan Thi Kim Chi (football), Truong Thanh Hang (athletics), Chau Tuyet Van (taekwondo), Nguyen Tran Duy Nhat (muay Thai)...
At the recent SEA Games 33, Ho Chi Minh City athletes and coaches made great contributions to the success of Vietnamese sports when participating in 37/45 sports, winning 25 gold medals, including impressive medals in shooting, pencak silat, karate...
Sharing at the conference, Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy, Vice Chairwoman of Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee, emphasized that in order for the city's sports sector to be strong in movement; professional, effective and sustainable, she has set out a number of requirements in the new period.

Accordingly, the sports sector needs to continue to further improve the quality of school sports, considering this as a foundation for long-term development, an environment to nurture physical strength, train willpower and create a solid source of successor athletes for high-performance sports.
Ho Chi Minh City sports must also continue to invest in infrastructure, improve operational efficiency and gradually develop the sports economy, turning sports potential into practical value, into a new driving force for development. Today's sports are not just a movement, not just competition, but also associated with services, tourism and improving the quality of urban life.
Another important requirement that Ho Chi Minh City leaders set for the local sports sector is to pay attention to building a team of officials, coaches, athletes and sports workforce that is on par with new requirements, capable of accessing modern training and management methods.
In addition, leaders of the Ho Chi Minh City sports sector need to continue to pay attention, create conditions, and propose building suitable sports models in residential areas as well as promoting sports forces in the socialized area to have effective activities.
The Ho Chi Minh City sports sector needs to prepare well and successfully organize the 10th National Sports Games in 2026 in a civilized, modern, professional, safe, and impressive manner.
“This is a particularly important political and professional task, and also an opportunity for the City, as the host unit, to affirm its organizational capacity, management, professional qualifications, facilities and image.
I propose that the sports sector must be proactive, drastic, thorough, and methodical in all work, from facilities, professional work, competition management, technology application to communication, reception, security, and health," Ms. Tran Thi Dieu Thuy emphasized.
