In order to realize the goals towards the Olympics and ASIAD for the 2026-2046 period, in recent times, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports have focused on investing in sports science, nutrition and biological medicine to support improving achievements.
However, the lack of a team of highly qualified sports medicine experts as well as investment that has not been properly paid attention to also contributed to the synchronous development of Vietnamese sports.
At the Workshop on giving comments on the development of key sports programs (28.3), Dr. Le Thanh Tung - Director of Vietnam Sports Hospital presented the importance of medicine in sports, and proposed solutions for health care, recovery and injury treatment for athletes.
The orientation of building a national sports medicine network and improving the efficiency of high-performance sports is very important.
Compared to advanced sports in the world, Vietnam's modern, in-depth and synchronous sports medicine system still has many limitations.
Typically, the physical examination and assessment process has not been standardized, not applied effectively science and technology; injury treatment and physical recovery have not been closely integrated into the training - competition - recovery cycle, lacking personality; human resources in sports medicine are still lacking and not uniform in quality...
Notably, the sports industry also does not have an interconnected athlete health data system, causing difficulties in monitoring, managing and forecasting injury risks; the sports medicine network at the facility is still weak, lacking professional connections with higher levels.
The above situation shows the necessity and urgency in building a synchronous, effective and sustainable sports medicine system, meeting the requirements of high-performance sports in the new period.
Based on practice, the representative of Vietnam Sports Hospital also proposed 5 orientation groups, including:
- Increase investment and perfect the mechanism to support the development of specialized sports medicine.
- Build a 3-line sports medicine network, connecting from the central to the grassroots level, including establishing a close coordination mechanism between the sports medicine and local health care systems to ensure continuity in monitoring and caring for athletes' health.
- Develop and standardize sports medicine human resources such as promoting regular training of sports doctors at universities, developing systematic and in-depth training programs, organizing training courses, thematic training, transferring techniques to medical staff at all levels...
- Promote international cooperation and the application of modern technology, including expanding cooperation, applying scientific advances such as artificial intelligence, participating in the international sports medicine network, updating modern trends...
- Build a comprehensive, modern and personalized sports medicine ecosystem such as developing a personalized electronic health record system; form a comprehensive care model: from prevention - early diagnosis - treatment - recovery - psychology - nutrition - competition optimization - prolonging working age...
Doctor Le Thanh Tung affirmed that in the context of Vietnam's sports developing in a professional, modern and scientific direction, building a synchronous, effective and sustainable sports medicine system is not only an urgent professional requirement, but also an important component of the national sports development strategy in the new period.
