Finding opportunities to exploit revenue from ticket sales for national sports tournaments

Currently in Vietnam, audiences who want to enter the stadium to watch the National Championship for football and volleyball must buy tickets while many other sports cannot sell tickets in the national competition system.

Buying sports tickets should become a habit

The Vietnam Department of Physical Education and Sports and the Vietnam Olympic Committee and related units have organized the Vietnam Sports Economic Forum for two consecutive years 2023, 2024.

Last year, the forum took a theme for discussion: Promoting the potential of the sports economy in the new era. Many speakers discussed separate content sessions. In particular, a content that received many opinions is how sports tournaments in Vietnam should have revenue from ticket sales because this is a significant resource to help reinvest in sports. Domestic sports managers are still looking for solutions to organize national sports tournaments (not international tournaments, invitation tournaments) in Vietnam effectively, sell tickets and the audience accepts to pay for tickets to go to the stadium to cheer.

A representative of the Vietnam Volleyball Federation once discussed at the Vietnam Sports Economic Forum 2024 that: "To compete for good revenue, professional quality must be good. The product is positioned as a tournament, so the viewer is the customer. When customers pay to buy tickets, they must be served good products with matches with high expertise.

The representative of the Vietnam Athletics Federation also expressed: "Maraathon Athletics tournaments are flourishing. There, people are willing to spend money to buy bibs (shorts) to run. They are both product buyers and also experience the product directly. This is the reason why Marathon athletes attract thousands of bib buyers as athletes to compete.

In the Strategy for the development of physical education and sports in Vietnam to 2030, with a vision to 2045, approved by the Government on October 15, 2024, one of the tasks and direct solutions for the content of Sports Economy is clearly stated: "S strongly develop types of sports training services, organize sports events, sell tickets to compete, train athletes, sports tourism, sports and entertainment, consulting, transfer brokerage and other physical and sports services.

Strengthen inter-sectoral coordination between the physical education and sports sectors with tourism, education and training, healthcare, information and communication and other related sectors in developing comprehensive services with cross-sectoral linkages to effectively exploit physical education and sports activities". In fact, audiences only go to watch the sport they love. Football and volleyball received special attention from society, so the tournament sold out. Many remaining sports in Vietnam, especially martial arts, cannot organize ticket sales at the national system tournament.

Ticket sales sports festival is inevitable

The 33rd SEA Games Organizing Committee announced that tickets to volleyball and football fields will be sold. Selling tickets to compete in sports of the Sports Festival program will bring legitimate revenue to the Organizing Committee. Many ASIAD and Olympic events have sold tickets for attractive sports. Therefore, the host Thailand announced that volleyball and football at the 33rd SEA Games will not be sold at all.

A representative of the Vietnam Olympic Committee once analyzed that sports are developing with the needs of society. Many non-traditional but entertaining sports are of great interest to fans. Therefore, if the tournament sells tickets, it is one of the appropriate ways to do sports economics.
